Motivation by Listening

Listening skills are a very powerful motivation factor.

Hardly any people are actually good at listening, being more interested in what they are going to say next. When you think about how many people you have met who can remember your name or what you said, you’ll find it is very few indeed. That generally seems to be the norm so when you do meet people who you think are good listeners, your feelings towards these particular people are usually more positive.

By that I mean you likely would place more trust and confidence in them. So because most of us find it very hard to listen, we are surprised by somebody who does listen and we tend to endow them with greater capabilities than they may possess.

This is the secret of motivation by listening. If we can learn to listen well, the people we listen to will be motivated and inspired by our attention.

Most salespeople consider themselves to be good talkers instead of listeners. You hear people saying: “He is a born salesman, he’s got the gift of the gab”. Many people believe that the speaker holds the power and that the listener is meek or docile. Actually you will find that the good listener has much more power in any conversation. The listener is able to gather more information than the talker and armed with information can then produce the desired result.

When two people are conversing, the one who really dominates the conversation is the person who is asking questions and listening carefully to the answers. When we want to motivate somebody to give their best effort, or to follow our direction, we will do so more effectively by listening to their responses to the situation.

Therefore the real job of the salesman is to listen carefully to his customers and understand their needs and concerns. Although they might ask you a few questions first, most successful salespeople will agree with this.

So what steps should you follow to create motivation by listening?

1. Repeat or rephrase so you can clarify the information given

2. Give useful information in return.

3. Listen for the emotions. Selling especially is often based on emotional factors more that objective facts.

4. Look people in the eye and make some reassuring gestures or tones to encourage the speaker.

5. Be careful not to distract the speaker – give them your full attention while they are talking.

6. Show that the discussion is important to you too.

Listening is an essential skill for making and keeping relationships. When you are acknowledged as a good listener people confide in you and trust you; as a manager of people or as a salesperson this is your route to success.

What Is Motivation

Motivation is the characteristic that is required in order to achieve anything in life; without it you will give up at the first sign of adversity. It means to inspire, instigate and encourage a person to do their best. Motivation will compel a person to think “If I can’t, then I must” and will cause them to do whatever it takes to become successful. If you inspire motivation it can change your life. You will be inspired to get what you want regardless of what people tell you that you can not do. I have personally seen people apply the motivation factors in life to get from poverty to a life filled with abundance.

Do you think you possess the quality? Only you can answer this question. Take a honest look at yourself; do you find yourself pursuing your goals everyday? Are you doing something to work towards them regardless of what is going on in your life? If you are then you; then my friend you do possess this characteristic and you will reach all your goals. I wake up at 5:00 in the morning to get started on my goals. I am passionate about reaching all my goals. Do you find yourself doing this or are you making excuses of why you can not work on a goal?

It will give you the passion to begin exploring what it is you really want to do in life, and give you the courage to follow your dreams. If you do not like where you currently are and are living life everyday unhappy and frustrated; it probably is because you do not possess any motivation for what you are currently doing. It is up to you to find out what you would really like to be doing with your life. What kind of lifestyle do you want? What kind of career do you want? Do you actually know what it is that would make you happy and excited about getting up out of bed in the morning?

This is a strong quality for anyone to possess; and you can only possess it when you set a burning desire to be do have something in life. No one can give it to you. It can change a persons life in many ways. It can change the way you think, and when you become involved with personal development and become a much more positive individual motivation will get you out of your negative environment.

It is the fuel that inspires us to reach our goals and achieve what we truly desire. It also allows us to keep getting up and moving forward when we get knocked down. Getting motivated and staying motivated gives us the energy we require to reach our goals in the shortest amount of time possible. It is required to meet our goals and do anything purposeful in life. Without it you will not want to get out of bed, clean the house, walk the dogs or do anything at all. Being successful in life and motivation go hand in hand. When you learn how to achieve motivation for something you truly desire; nothing can stop you from having it. So think about it; what truly motivates you then take action towards it and watch it become your reality.

Motivation Theory

The word motivation is coined from the Latin word “movere”, which means to move. Motivation is defined as an internal drive that activates behavior and gives it direction. The term motivation theory is concerned with the processes that describe why and how human behavior is activated and directed. It is regarded as one of the most important areas of study in the field of organizational behavior. There are two different categories of motivation theories such as content theories, and process theories. Even though there are different motivation theories, none of them are universally accepted.

Also known as need theory, the content theory of motivation mainly focuses on the internal factors that energize and direct human behavior. Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, Alderfer’s ERG theory, Herzeberg’s motivator-hygiene theory (Herzeberg’s dual factors theory), and McClelland’s learned needs or three-needs theory are some of the major content theories.

Of the different types of content theories, the most famous content theory is Abraham Maslow’s hierarchy of human needs. Maslow introduced five levels of basic needs through his theory. Basic needs are categorized as physiological needs, safety and security needs, needs of love, needs for self esteem and needs for self-actualization.

Just like Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, ERG theory explains existence, relatedness, and growth needs. Through dual factors theory, Herzeberg describes certain factors in the workplace which result in job satisfaction. McClelland’s learned needs or three-needs theory uses a projective technique called the Thematic Aptitude Test (TAT) so as to evaluate people based on three needs: power, achievement, and affiliation. People with high need of power take action in a way that influences the other’s behavior.

Another type of motivation theory is process theory. Process theories of motivation provide an opportunity to understand thought processes that influence behavior. The major process theories of motivation include Adams’ equity theory, Vroom’s expectancy theory, goal-setting theory, and reinforcement theory. Expectancy, instrumentality, and valence are the key concepts explained in the expectancy theory. Goal setting theory suggests that the individuals are motivated to reach set goals. It also requires that the set goals should be specific. Reinforcement theory is concerned with controlling behavior by manipulating its consequences.

Trains, Planes Or Automobiles

With the population of the world growing at a steady pace, the governments of various countries are doing their best to provide their people with easy modes of transportation. Today, one can travel across the world easily and at relatively inexpensive rates. All three modes of travelling, including trains, airplanes and automobiles each have their own importance.

Automobiles are best for cities and towns. A journey of ten or twenty miles is an everyday affair for most people and in order to save money, people travel by buses or their own vehicles. A major part of the population travel by bus in many countries. Bus fares are cheap and a large number of buses operate in heavily traveled areas. It is usually easy to find a bus traveling to and from your part of town and a large number of people travel by bus when going to work and even school.

Cars give you the flexibility to manage things according to you. You are not dependent on the timing of the public transport and if you have a job that requires you to make a lot of adjustment in your daily schedule then a private vehicle is perhaps the best choice for you.

In order to travel larger distances, many people use trains. Trains are perhaps the most common mode of travelling for people who have to cover a fair bit of distance to get to their workplaces or offices. Similarly, trains are very useful if you wish to travel from one city to another. The rates are affordable and trains offer a comfortable journey.

In order to travel within the country, one can also get an airplane ticket but the prices are always more expensive than that of other modes of travel. However, with the present economic conditions, the prices of some airfares have been slashed to an affordable amount and some flights are available at cheap rates. Flights are the best option in case of emergencies as well. Flights connecting different cities reach their destination in a few hours. You might have to travel for a day in a train to get to the same destination but flights get you to the destination in just a few hours.

If you are looking to travel to another country, then in most cases you have no other option but to travel by air. One can also travel by a ship, but fares for a cruise are often expensive and the services are restricted to only a few ports around the world. The bottom line is that the mode of transportation that you should choose depends on the distance you have to travel.

Kids With Cancer and Energy Techniques in a Hospital – How it Started

This intense, enormous project of working with energy techniques like EFT and kids with cancer in a hospital started when I was invited to participate in a Fundraiser for Kids with Cancer. I went to the fundraiser thinking: "Let's see what happens?" Being open to all possibilities led to a life-long project that continues to expand and fill my heart with love.

It started out with a conversation between the head oncologist and me about Energy Techniques like EFT and the needs of these children beyond the physical treatments they receive. He commented on me trying it in the hospital.

I first showed the nursing staff how to tap because they are in immediate contact with the children on a daily basis. I wanted them to know personally what I was going to do so as not to be surprised by the funny looking "tappings" and "TappyBear" I would be using. I led them through a few rounds of tapping about their work stresses and we ended up laughing and relaxing. This beautiful connection between me and these nurses who care so diligently for these children established a basis of trust. I believe that connecting with the nurses has been "key" to success because they freely allow me to work with the children.

The children's cancer ward environment consists of a waiting room where up to 25 parents and children wait for treatments and two hospital rooms with either 3 or 6 beds.

The first day I walked into the cancer ward, I felt overwhelmed. It was as if I had been hit by a wall of sadness, pain, misery and fear, the emotions that they kids and parents felt. One mother and her child huddled together in a corner. There were about 30 others in the room in a similar state. I felt that their perception was that they were alone, huddled in their own misery. It deeply saddened me, this lonely, isolated and depressing image.

The children and parents who tapped with me began to feel relief on many levels, emotional and physical. With time, and, as more and more of the children and parents tapped, the atmosphere of the cancer ward changed significantly.

Here are a few changes I witnessed:

– Four children and their parents laughing together over breakfast. It was so noteworthy that even the doctor commented on it.
– On another visit, the children played games, did puzzles, drew and colored, or played ball and constructed things out of Legos, together or on their own. There was laughter and much chatter among the kids.
– Parents had markedly reduced anxiety, stress and fear, which allowed them to be joyful with their children.
– Parents began to talk and share experiences and help each other out. One mother explained that before learning EFT she couldn't help anyone else. She was completely absorbed in her own problems with her son's cancer that she couldn't even think about what was going on with the other children and parents much less help them. After EFT she felt empowered, calm and much more relaxed in the face of her child's cancer. She now enthusiastically goes out of her way to help the children and other parents.
– The nurse's work is more relaxing and enjoyable because interacting with children who are calm and accepting of them and / or their treatments makes their job easier and less stressful.
– The doctor and nurses observed improved compliance in the children as they did miss their appointments at the hospital and took their medications more consistently.

Walking into the cancer ward now is a different experience. The ward feels light and comfortable. The ever present and seriousness of the disease still exists, but the intense fear of it or the inability to manage it is not. Laughter is now frequently heard in the cancer ward. These shifts alone have been worth bringing the gift of energy techniques and EFT to the hospital.

See "The Oaxaca Project" to read more about this labor of love.

Advocacy for the Deaf and Mute Patients

As you nurses go on with your daily tasks of carrying out doctor’s orders and caring for your patients, have you ever wondered what happened to the old fashion way of nurse-patient interaction? How many of your patients today have you actually took time to talk to and learn first hand information on what specific set of behaviour brought them to the hospital today? One? None?

With the nurse-patient ratio existent in many public hospitals today, it is quite impossible to attain this one basic principle you learned from Fundamentals of Nursing. It is not surprising that many people are still unaware how much activity a nurse must finish within her 8-hour shift. Most of the time, spending a quality nurse-patient interaction would be the least of the nurse’s priority because of staffing shortage as well as the tasks that she needs to accomplish within the day. As such, how will a nurse get sufficient clinical subjective information from the communication-challenged individuals, like the mute and deaf? Surely, a private hospital will have an in-house specialist for this type of clients. But how about the government or public hospitals? Would you say public hospital nurses are not up to this type of challenge? Before you make up your mind, here are two factors which, both the private and public hospital will have difficulty in resolving:

Patient’s Communication Skills

Bear in mind that effective communication involves feedback. Regardless of the presence of an in-house communication specialist within the private hospital, if the patient cannot communicate using the tools that the specialist have, there won’t be any progress at all. What will a nurse do if she has a deaf and mute as well as illiterate patient?

A nurse can use illustrations and photos to teach this type of patient, but to get the subjective data necessary to confirm a clinical status would require quality nurse-patient interaction and collaboration with the closest family member of the patient.

Reason for Hospital Admission

It is not surprising for a nurse to receive a patient with symptoms of abuse. She can take note of this from the bouts of crying or tension of the patient whenever the source of abuse is present. However, this may be difficult when the patient is both deaf and mute. It would be a real challenge to prove abuse, especially if clinical symptoms that are verifiable with physical examination in conjunction with laboratory tests provide no clues. The nurse will have to use her senses most of the time with these types of patients.

Being present inside the room every time someone visits the patient would be ideal. She can take note of her patient’s reaction towards the visitor to assess behavior. She can then recommend these observations to a psychologist.

These patients are those kind of patients that nurses need to spend more time to establish rapport. You can expect that individuals with this disability are more apprehensive of strangers.

Of course, nurses would like to get the ideal – a patient who can communicate his needs clearly and effectively. But alas, the situations most nurses are in, were most of the time, far from the ideal.

It’s circumstances like these that makes a nurse want to learn more – to get her communication skills amplified. She can voluntarily take courses on hand communication for the deaf and the mute. After getting these skills, she can gather out of school youth in her locale and teach the basics to these children and teenagers. At the hospital, she can propose a program for the admitted deaf and mute patients to learn the basics of this communication.

The nurse may not be satisfied with these simple altruistic methods, such that she can start to join NGO’s and advocate this in public schools, colleges and universities. In fact, a nurse can do a study on this and have it communicated to the allied health professions as a wake up call. Well, these are just ideas, but hey, human inventions resulted from ideas, right?

Mobile POS Usage in Hospital Retail Operations

As consumers, most of us have had some exposure to a mobile POS system while either shopping at a retail store, or dining at a restaurant or quick serve establishment. Many restaurant servers now come to the table equipped with a mobile or hand-held device for order taking instead of the traditional order pad and pencil, with the completed table order automatically going to the kitchen, and the server quickly moving on to the next table. In many retail stores, clerks now walk the sales floor with a mobile POS device for line busting to quickly check out customers standing in long lines and get them on their way faster. This not only speeds check out time and increases customer satisfaction, but also reduces the potential for losing a customer.

Healthcare retail offers many opportunities where a mobile POS solution can provide added convenience to employees and guests, expand the functionality already present in a traditional POS system, and greatly improve operational efficiency with cost saving results.

The Cafeteria and Coffee Cart

Take for example the hospital cafeteria with traditional POS terminals situated in the check-out lanes, and additional outdoor seating that opens when the weather permits. Rather than routing patrons through the check-out lanes to pay for food and beverages before seating themselves outside, mobility allows the transaction to be performed at table side giving the employee or guest more time to enjoy their meal and dining experience, or possibly prevent the loss of a customer. With a traditional POS system in place, the cafeteria menu may be broadcasted to the mobile device with detailed sales data rolling into a central data base for reporting and informed decision-making. Mobile solutions are also ideally suited for mobile coffee carts, or mobile food carts where a POS system is needed, but space and portability rules out a large cash register with all its peripheral devices.

Patient Guest Services

A lot of hospitals now offer patient guests the convenience of ordering food and beverages from the cafeteria menu presented on an iPad or Android device, and paying either by cash or credit card on the same device. Just image visiting a friend or family member in their hospital room as patient dining is either taking or delivering their meal. It’s a great comfort and convenience to be able to order and enjoy your meals together.

The Gift Shop and Fundraisers

Usually run by the hospital gift shop, fundraisers are a vital revenue generator for the hospital retail area. Generally held in the hospital lobby, the fundraising event may sell anything from uniforms to jewelry, and are usually geared to the hospital employees. The use of a mobile POS system is ideal for this temporary event, especially when the capability to accept credit card or employee payroll deductions as payment types is enabled.

Tell us about how you’re using a Mobil POS solution in your hospital, or where your operation has a need for it.

One of these responsibilities is arranging a suitable animal hospital where general checkups as well as complicated operations in time of need are possible.

In addition to the location, it is also important to consider the services that are available with the hospital. For instance, many animal hospitals offer special appointments or programs to the new clients. They offer expert advice and treatment for elderly animals or those with serious ailments. In the very first meeting, it is important to discuss with your veterinarian what exactly are your expectations and how you want to proceed further.

In addition to above, there are a few other aspects you need to consider while selecting a suitable animal hospital for your pet. For instance you should inquire about the license of the veterinarian and find out if the hospital has a registered veterinary staff or not. There are a number of tests a registered veterinary personnel have to pass. These include the regulated state tests for treating all vets. It is important to go to a registered technician because he will have the skills and experience that are considered must for the examinations and proper treatment of the vets.

You should not allow a non-registered technician to administer pills and shots or to treat your pet as this can prove to be very dangerous. It is also important to first tour any animal hospital to interview the veterinarian. While doing so, you should observe if proper hygiene is maintained in the hospital or not; especially in the surgical rooms and examination rooms.
